Privacy

We take your privacy seriously. The personal information that you give to www.returningheritage.com (‘we’, ‘our’, ‘us’) and that we collect from you (‘you’, ‘your’) is governed by our Privacy Policy. This Policy sets out our accountability and obligations to you when we collect, use and protect the personal information that you provide us when visiting our website.

In order that you are aware of the reasons why we collect your personal information and how we use it, while at the same time respecting your privacy and ensuring that you retain all your legal rights, it is important that you read this Privacy Policy, together with any other notice we may provide when we are collecting or processing your personal information.

This Policy may change and, in the event that we make any significant changes, we will advise you on our website (www.returningheritage.com) or we will contact you directly. We recommend that you check our Privacy Policy from time to time to ensure you are happy with any changes.

If you have any questions about this Policy or have any concern about how we are handling your personal information, please contact us directly at info@returningheritage.com

The information that we collect

Returningheritage.com is a subscription-free online publication. We do not sell products or promote other services. We will collect, process and store only the following types of personal information from you, if you choose to register:

  • Your identity, including your title, first name, last name and/or company name.
  • Your contact information, which may include your email address, postal address, telephone number and IP addresses.

In the event you wish to post a comment about any article we publish, you give your consent for Returningheritage.com to attribute your comments only to the name you provide when contacting us by email.

Why we may collect personal information

The UK General Data Protection Regulation (‘GDPR’) exists to protect and represent your privacy. Although the EU GDPR, an EU Regulation, no longer applies to the UK, it has been incorporated into UK data protection law as the UK GDPR. There is little change to its core data protection principles, rights and obligations. In particular, it places obligations on us as Data Controller to process the personal information we collect if you choose to subscribe with us in a manner compliant with the enhanced data protection rights introduced by the GDPR.

We may collect your personal information from our website for our legitimate business interest when:

  • Subscribing – We provide an email to visitors who choose to subscribe on the site in order they may receive alerts each time a new article is published. The decision to subscribe is entirely voluntary. Access to returningheritage.com is free and is not dependent on a subscription.
  • Commenting - Visitors to our website are encouraged to post comments and to share their views on any topic covered within the news or education archives available on Returningheritage.com. Visitors to Returningheritage.com who post comments onto the website provide their consent for us to publish their name only, as provided when emailing their comments.
  • Enquiring - Contacting us in any other way, including online, email, phone, SMS, social media or post, concerning articles, media enquiries or speaking engagements.
  • Sharing - We may also collect your personal information when you give other organisations your permission to share it. They should only do so in the way they have set out in their own Privacy Policy, which you should check when you give them your details.
  • Messaging - Your information may be available on social media. Depending on your settings or the privacy policies applying for social media and messaging services that you use - like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter - and only within the context of the content that we offer, you might give us permission to access information from those accounts or services. We will not share this information.

How we use your information

In addition to the uses listed above, from time to time we may wish to send you other information which we believe may be of interest. We will only use your personal information in those ways which reflect the legal basis applying to the processing of your data. These may include:

  • providing you with the email alerts that you consent to receive when registering, using the contact data we have transferred to our third-party email service (MailChimp);
  • if you elect to do so, receiving communications from us which we believe may be of interest, including about campaigns and appeals to which you may wish to lend your support;
  • seeking your views on the content our website provides so we can make improvements;
  • maintaining our internal records in order to understand how you prefer to be contacted;
  • analysing the operation of our website and analysing your website behaviour to improve our service and the website’s value.

Our legal basis for processing your information

The processing of your information for the purposes set out above is lawful because one or more of the following will apply:

  • We process your personal information because you have chosen to register to receive email alerts.
  • If you provide information to us when posting comments about an article published on our website, we will proceed on the basis that you have given us consent to use the information for that purpose, based on the way you provided that information.
  • It is necessary for us to comply with our legal obligations.At any time, you may withdraw your consent to the use of your personal information by emailing us at info@returningheritage.com. This will not affect the lawfulness of our processing your information prior to your withdrawal of consent being received and actioned. Comments that you have posted will not be removed.

The security of your personal information

We are committed to ensuring the security of your personal information. We will not sell, distribute or lease this information to any third party, unless (a) we give you prior notice; (b) you provide us with your consent; or (c) we are required by law.

At Returningheritage.com only authorised persons will have access to your information. This means only our employees and any contractors that may, from time to time, be approved by us to access such information. All those with access to your personal information are trained in the secure management of this data.

We will share the personal information of all those who register for email alerts with a third-party email service, in order they can process these mailings. This third-party is appointed after we are satisfied they will operate with the same attention to data protection as ourselves. We only provide the mailing house with the information necessary for them to provide this service. An agreement is in place with the mailing house to ensure your privacy rights are protected and the mailing house has complied with GDPR requirements and safeguards.

We use analytics and search engine providers from time to time to help us monitor and improve the performance of our website and its use.

We may also disclose your personal information if we are required to do so under a legal obligation. This may arise, for example, with an investigation for the purposes of fraud prevention, where it is necessary and in the public interest, and where no infringement of your rights is put at risk.

The UK GDPR imposes restrictions on the transfer of personal information outside the UK and European Economic Area (EEA). These countries may not be subject to the same data protection regulations as apply in the UK and we cannot be sure your information will have equivalent protection as it has within the UK.

Please note, the current data protection regime, introduced when the UK left membership of the EU on 31 December 2020, may be subject to further change as new adequacy arrangements are agreed. At this point, we may need to make changes to our data protection arrangements. We will advise you on our website (www.returningheritage.com) or contact you directly about these changes.

Please be aware, no data transmission over the worldwide internet is guaranteed secure unless it has been encrypted. While we take all necessary steps to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its security or accept responsibility for unauthorised access or the loss of any information you provide online. When providing personal information, you do this at your own risk.

In the event of a personal data breach, we will notify the Information Commissioner’s Office (‘ICO’) and, where required, individuals or organisations, if it is likely to result in a risk to your personal rights and freedoms.

Links to other websites

We deploy hyperlinks regularly on our website that will take you to third-party websites where further information, relevant to an article published on Returningheritage.com, can be accessed. Please be aware, we do not investigate, monitor or control any third-party websites to ensure their accuracy, security or completeness. We have no control over the privacy and protection of any information you might share when visiting a third-party site, which you do at your own risk. Therefore, we recommend you always exercise caution and read the privacy policy stated on that website.

Our Privacy Policy does not cover the use of your personal data on any third-party websites.

How long we keep your personal information

We will store your personal information for as long as it is necessary for us to carry out our obligations to provide you with email alerts about new content when you register with us, or until you instruct us to remove your personal information.

We may periodically ask you to renew your consent.

If you ask us to stop contacting you and to delete your name and other personal information from our register, we shall keep only a record of your contact details and that information needed to demonstrate we have complied with your request. Periodically, we shall review the length of time we keep this data.

We encourage you to let us know when your contact details change. You can do so by contacting us at info@returningheritage.com.

Once you agree they can be deployed on your hard drive, they enable us to collect information that helps analyse web traffic and to respond to you as an individual. Cookies make the website work more efficiently. For example, they help us identify which pages are being used (or not) and how often. They are stored on your hard drive to allow our site to recognise you each time you visit. Cookies do not give us access to personal information on your computer, other than information you choose to share with us.

Your rights

  • the rights you hold in relation to automated decision-making and profiling, including profiling for marketing purposes.

To exercise any of these rights, you should contact us at info@returningheritage.com.

If you are not happy with the way in which we have processed or dealt with your information, you can complain to the ICO.
